Richard B. Simon, MD has been practicing ophthalmology in Miami, Florida since 1983. He graduated with honors from the University of Florida in 1972. He then returned to Miami to attend the University of Miami School of Medicine and received his medical degree in 1976. While a medical student, Dr. Simon focused on Emergency Medicine and tackled the toughest of cases that were presented in an Emergency Room setting. Dr. Richard Simon continued his ophthalmology training at The Washington Hospital Center, in Washington D.C. and completed his fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus in 1982.
Dr. Richard Simon's interest in refractive surgery began early in his career, starting with radial keratotomy in 1984. This interest evolved with changing technology. Shortly after the Food and Drug Administration approved the excimer laser in 1997, Dr. Richard Simon became certified by VISX to perform laser vision correction for treatment of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. As an active member of many scientific societies, Dr. Simon regularly attends meetings with other ophthalmologists from around the world reviewing the latest data and advances in refractive surgery.
Dr. Richard Simon sees patients of all ages, from infancy to the elderly, performing many types of surgeries in addition to laser vision correction. He treats patients with strabismus, cataracts, glaucoma, as well as other ophthalmic disorders. Dr. Simon is one of the few ophthalmologists in the area with fellowship training and experience in treating patients with eye muscle imbalances.
Throughout his years of practice, Dr. Simon has served the community with pride. He is an active staff member at Baptist Hospital and has served as Chairman of Ophthalmology at South Miami Hospital. Dr. Simon has been on the Board of Directors of the Dade County Medical Association, where he chaired several committees that worked on the delivery of medical care. Dr. Simon is board-certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a member of the Florida Society of Ophthalmology, Florida Medical Association and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology.
Dr. Simon has been named four years in a row as one of South Florida's premier ophthalmologists by Miami Magazine. When not involved with patient care, Dr. Simon enjoys many activities and hobbies with his wife and two children.
