Corneal Diseases
The cornea is the eye’s protective barrier (along with the sclera) – it does everything from helping to filter out harmful ultraviolet light, to repelling dirt and germs that can damage the delicate balance.
When light enters the eye, the cornea is responsible for bending the light; it’s this curve that helps determine how well you can see certain objects at various distances. The cornea is the most essential component to good vision.
The cornea is a rather resilient part of the eye – it usually heals after most injuries and does so rather quickly. The cornea doesn’t contain blood vessels to help nourish it, and it must remain clear to continue to work properly. When it’s scratched, serious problems can develop if the healing process takes too long.
