Frank E. Spektor, MD

Frank E. Spektor, MD was born and raised in Cape Town South Africa. In 1973 he graduated from the University of Cape Town Medical School. After completing his internship and a mandatory year in the medical corps of the South African Defense Force, he immigrated to the United States with his wife. After six months of a general surgery residency in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Dr. Spektor was trained as an ophthalmologist at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania, Scheie Eye Institute and completed his training in 1980.

Since 1980, Dr. Spektor has been in private practice in the Kendall area of Miami and has been an active member at Baptist, South Miami and Doctor’s Hospitals. He has also been a provisional staff member at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

Dr. Spektor’s interest and participation in refractive surgery date back to his early days in practice. He began successfully treating refractive errors using a procedure that eventually led to LASIK called Radial Keratotomy (RK) and remained at the forefront of developments in this field. Dr. Spektor has traveled to several other countries observing and learning the latest procedures. Shortly after the Food and Drug Administration approved the excimer laser in 1997, Dr. Spektor began performing LASIK and became certified by VISX to perform laser vision correction procedures for the treatment of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Dr. Spektor has also become the practice’s most experienced Visian ICL surgeon. The Visian ICL is the implantable Collamer lens and is mainly used as a premium alternative to LASIK. Since it is commonly used for patients with high levels of refractive error or thinner corneas, Dr. Spektor’s patients have a wide variety of options when they come to see him for refractive surgery. Amongst Dr. Spektor’s refractive patients are many of his peer physicians on staff at Baptist Hospital.

The other field of expertise that Dr. Spektor has is in Laser Cataract Surgery and “no stitch-no needle-no patch”, cataract surgery. In 2013, Dr. Spektor became certified to perform femtosecond laser cataract surgery on the Lensar system at the Medical Arts Surgery Center in Baptist Hospital.

Dr. Spektor has always enjoyed the practice of General Ophthalmology and taking care of his patients with a whole range of ophthalmic medical and surgical conditions. He delights in helping his patients to regain and preserve their eyesight. His patients enjoy his attentive bedside manner and careful personal approach in treating their visual needs.

One of Dr. Spektor’s most interesting patients was Josephine the Gorilla at the Miami Metro Zoo. On October 3, 2009, Dr. Spektor was asked to perform cataract surgery on Josephine, a 42-year-old, 160-pound gorilla at Miami Metro Zoo. Dr. Spektor remembers what an exciting experience this was for him as it was a bit out of the ordinary for his average patient base.

Dr. Spektor is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Florida Society of Ophthalmology, Florida Medical Association and the Dade County Medical Association. He has also been selected for several years by his peers as one of South Florida’s leading Ophthalmologists in the Miami Metro magazine’s poll of physicians.
