July Feature: Dr. William Trattler’s Dedication to Crosslinking & Curing Corneal Disease Finally Pays Off

For 8 years, Dr. William Trattler has been deeply involved in helping patients with Keratoconus and Corneal Ectasia through the use of Corneal Collagen Cross Linking. As a corneal subspecialist, Dr. Trattler has been on the forefront of all research having to do with corneal diseases, conditions and refractive surgery developments. He has led many studies and been asked by hundreds of companies to test out devices, equipment, lenses and procedures for all corneal and anterior segment conditions.

There are too many to list in this one blog feature, but we want to make a couple important highlights.

Since 2008, Dr. Trattler has worked with multiple companies involved in various clinical trials using CXL to treat Keratoconus and has so much experience that has brought him patients from not just the US, but around the globe. He has performed all versions of CXL and was so proud this April when CXL was FINALLY approved by the FDA. This procedure has been approved for years in Europe and other countries.

Along with CXL, Dr. Trattler has also done a lot of work with Intraocular Lens (IOL) trials involved in cataract surgery. He has worked with multiple lenses and been on the forefront of decisions with companies on what technology works for testing patients prior to choosing lenses as well as the lenses themselves.

He was instrumental in bringing Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery to Miami! He now uses Laser Cataract Surgery on most if not all of his happy cataract patients!

In April, Dr. Trattler was named one of the TOP 100 Most Powerful people in Ophthalmology in 2016. A month before that he was asked to join OWL as their Membership Advisor!

One of his biggest achievements in our eyes was the enormous ophthalmology HONOR he received when he was presented LIVE with the 2015 Casebeer Award for the United States at the annual American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) meeting in Las Vegas, NV in November 2015. Dr. Trattler was congratulated by the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) which is a partner of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). The Casebeer Award recognizes an individual for his or her outstanding contributions to refractive surgery through nontraditional research and development activities! Arguably one of the biggest honors in ophthalmology than any physician can be awarded.

Dr. Trattler has spent years in improving Refractive Surgery Outcomes and analyzing Dry Eye disease. He has determined and published information on what works, what doesn’t work, various fixes to technology and has most importantly, always shared his passion with anyone who will listen: his partners at the Center for Excellence in Eye Care, his patients, his staff, his family, his friends, and anyone who will listen.

I could go on and on and on.

What we want to highlight this month is his incredible way of sharing what he does. He doesn’t just see patients and go day to day. He has taken all that he has learned in his immense experience and lectured all over the globe, spoken to local physicians in our community in Miami (which he does daily), and had tons of medical students rotate with him to teach them all he knows. He just recently got back from the IIRSI 2016 in Chennai, India!

We want to specifically celebrate his work this month due to the fact that his work has now led him to one of his major goals: educating all of the medical community.

It is not a coincidence that he has actually put together an incredible new CME conference that is launching this weekend on Miami Beach: The 2016 Advanced Refractive Surgery Congress. Opthalmologists, Optometrists and all eye specialists will be gathering together to learn the latest developments on all things that have been part of Dr. Trattler’s passion: all corneal conditions, IOL’s for cataract surgery, the latest developments and research in LASIK and refractive surgery, specialty contact lenses (scleral lenses) and all corneal disease treatments. Dr. Trattler has pulled together so many incredible, dynamic figureheads in ophthalmology, all leaders in their specialties, and ready to share their experience and skills with the medical world.

CONGRATULATIONS DR TRATTLER, your contributions to refractive surgery and anterior segment disease have clearly not gone unrecognized both here in the US and Internationally. We are so proud to work with you on helping patients daily with their vision in LASIK, laser cataract surgery, Corneal Crosslinking (CXL) and all other refractive surgery procedures!
