Frames & Lenses

Glasses MiamiAt the Center for Excellence in Eye Care, we carry a vast array of very economical frames for our patients who are trying to work within a budget. Our expert staff is eager to show our patients how they can save on their selection.

For those of you looking for a specific designer, we have frames to satisfy those desires as well. Below are the designer frames we carry. Our opticians look forward to helping you find the right frames for you.

Of course, the proper lens also has to be matched to your needs. The optical at the Center for Excellence in Eye Care has a myriad of lens options which are sure to meet the most demanding needs.

Anti-Reflective

An anti-reflective coating is one of the fastest growing lens options to date. This coating reduces the glare that can many times reflect off of a lens. The result serves an esthetic purpose, but more importantly, it helps to improve sharpness of vision. The coating can help cut down haloes from on-coming car headlights, especially for patients with early cataracts. It can also make it easier to work on a computer since it can help cut down on excessive reflections from the monitor. More and more, this option is rapidly becoming a must-have for our patients. Anti-reflective coatings have also become much easier to take care of than when this lens treatment was first introduced.

Transitions®

Transitions are also another popular lens alternative, especially here in sunny South Florida. This lens darkens when it is exposed to ultra-violet (sun light) light, but lightens automatically indoors. Patients are now able to have both sunglasses and light colored indoor glasses in one single frame. Polarized lenses are also a popular South Florida option. This too helps to reduce glare, especially in bright sunshine. Polarization makes this a favorite for water sports enthusiasts, since it allows you to get a better view of what is under the surface of the water. Fishermen can therefore see fish more easily from above the water. This same property can make the sun’s reflection off of a shiny surface somewhat less harsh as well.

UV Protection

Of course ultra-violet protection is another essential in our sunny state. Ultra-violet light is thought to possibly increase damage to the retina , accelerate the development of cataracts, and induce the development of pterygia (a white growth that can develop on the conjunctiva and progress onto the cornea). An ultra-violet coating can protect against all of these ocular insults. This lens coating can be added to both clear as well as tinted lenses.

Impact Resistant

There are also certain materials which can enhance the performance and/or the overall comfort of a pair of glasses. Polycarbonate as well as Trivex lenses are impact resistant, which means they are less likely to shatter. These materials are indicated for children or someone whose job requires extra eye protection. Both materials are also often chosen for rimless frames again because for their inherent strength.

High Index

High index plastics are another material used to enhance a pair of glasses. These materials are used to make the lenses thinner. This is important for high prescriptions since higher powered glasses tend to weigh too much and appear much thicker. A high index plastic can decrease the thickness of a lens by as much as 30% or more, which can significantly impact the comfort and the esthetics of a pair of glasses.

Progressive Lenses

One of the most important advances in lens design has been the advent of progressives. This is a bifocal lens with no line, and the transition from distance to near is incremental so as to appear seamless. These lenses allow a patient to not only see distance and near, but it also permits one to view that ever important intermediate area where our computers are located. This is a great lens of choice for an active lifestyle, and most find the lack of a visible line especially appealing.

For the few people who may not be entirely happy with their conventional progressives when they are on the computer, there are now computer-specific designs available. These lenses have an intermediate prescription in the top for the monitor viewing distance and a reading power below. This option works well for those of us who spend extended hours in front of a screen.

Our optical also has the ability to incorporate prisms into a glasses prescription. This is done in order to alleviate double vision due to an eye misalignment better known as strabismus. In order to execute such a correction into a pair of glasses, it requires meticulous communication between our lab and our optical staff. Over the years, we have dispensed many such prescriptions.
